WPM ltd 011 - DEEPGROOVE

WPM ltd 011 - DEEPGROOVE
If you read as many press releases and publicity packs as us, you’ll know that the phrase “Critically acclaimed” is abused and overused, and often doesn’t come with the qualifiers it needs, leading to a deep suspicion that the critics doing the acclaiming are the DJ’s mum, his girlfriend, and Steve from down the pub. So for number 11 in our WPM ltd series, it gives us great pleasure to use those tainted words for a couple of DJs who really do deserve it - alongside praise for their crowdpleasing DJ sets, the last couple of months have seen their latest long player 13Machines (with Jamie Anderson) getting 4/5 stars from DJ Mag, 4/5 from Mixmag, and an incredible 9/10 from iDJ. Yes, without hyperbole, it’s the, ahem, critically acclaimed Deepgroove.
For their exclusive WPM ltd mix, Deepgrove take the minimal basics, add a little jacking vibe, and push it all into a proper banging groove. It’s a big mix with a big sound, but it’s just a little taster of what you can expect from them live.

LDN/MAN/UK 005

LDN/MAN/UK 005 ZOOM CLUB RESIDENTS MIX
We love London, but it’s fair to say that we’ve got more than our fair share of techno DJs here. So this week we’re pleased to bring you the first mix to put the MAN in our LDN/MAN/UK series. Representing their city in fine style, Zoom Club residents Nathan and Tim serve up a selection of the tracks that have been rocking their dancefloor, complete with warm shifting melodies and those skippy beats we dig. The Zoom Club boys obviously have similar taste to us, because we’ve been dropping a few of these killers ourselves.
We had the pleasure of playing at Zoom Club last autumn, and what can we say? There’s something magical about that small-club-banging-party vibe, where you know the crowd’s going to be friendly and the music’s going to be just what you want. So if you’re in London, head to The Russian for WEPLAYMUSIC, and if you’re in Manchester, get your arse to The Corner for a little bit of ZOOM.

WPM ltd 010 - NAMITO

WPM ltd 010 - NAMITO
Imagine you had a time machine capable of delivering you to some of the great moments of dance music’s past. Where would you go? How about dropping in on 1974 for one of David Mancuso’s legendary Loft parties? Or some time around 1989, for a proper rave-up in a muddy field just off the M25? Or… what about Berlin in 1994, following the fall of the wall, where the city was alive with the people’s new found freedom, and newly acquired love of techno?
Well, that’s where you would have spotted Namito earning his DJ stripes, at the legendary clubs Tresor and E-Werk - and needless to say, we’re somewhat jealous. We think we can hear a bit of the influence of that early Berlin techno sound in Namito’s WPM ltd mix, as combining chugging rhythms with strobing synths, it seems to radiate a certain techy warmth that’s often missing from today’s minimal styled mixes.
Aside from working as club DJ, Namito was quick to move into production, and released his first tracks way back in 1996. More recently, alongside his own quality tunes, Namito has also produced a series of killer collaborations with Martin Eyerer on labels like Great Stuff, Kling Klong, Systematic and Boxer Recordings.

LDN/MAN/UK 004

LDN/MAN/UK 004 THICK AS THIEVES
Is everyone in London a DJ? Sometimes it seems so. The question is then, with so many DJs in this great city of ours, how can you find out who’s the shit and who’s just shit? Fortunately here in WEPLAYMUSIC we’re here to help, because we’re utterly obsessed with finding the best DJs and top tunes, and showcasing them right here on weplaymusic.co.uk.
Which leads us nicely onto the latest installment of our LDN/MAN/UK series featuring a little something from Danny Bartha and James Hamilton, AKA Thick As Thieves. Having played alongside Terry Francis at Nature or Nurture you know that they’ve got class, and this mix doesn’t disappoint on that front, as it sees them slickly blending straight-up dancefloor rhythms with that synthetic deepness that’s well in vogue right now - light on the jazz but heavy on the atmosphere.
If you like what you hear, then make sure to check out WEPLAYMUSIC on Thursday 4th March, when we’re pleased to be hosting James and Danny for what will no doubt be an awesome set.

WPM ltd 009 - RAMON TAPIA

RAMON TAPIA
So it’s goodbye noughties, hello twenty-tenties! We’re long past those milestones of sci-fi - 1984, Space: 1999, 2001 - so by all accounts we’re quite literally living in the future. OK, so we might not have our personal jetpacks yet and people like to dress like it’s 1986, but when it comes to music, well… What with dubstep, minimal, fidget house, electro-tango, glitchpop, and a million other clinically synthezised and surgically sampled tunes, everything sounds more futuristic than ever.
Which leads nicely onto this week’s guest mix by the highly respected Ramon Tapia (AKA El Carlitto). With its technified grooves, driving bassline bounce and dash of latin percussion, all slickly produced and mixed, it’s a perfect example of the house sound of now. And as a label mate of Rainer Weichhold (as featured on WPM ltd 008), you know Ramon has the Great Stuff seal of approval, which is more than good enough for us in WEPLAYMUSIC.
When he’s not busy producing his own tracks or remixing the likes of Luomo, Martin Eyerer, and Butch & Amir, you can find Ramon DJing in clubs around the world (with a packed schedule hitting Antwerp, Munich, Lisbon, Moscow and Rottendam in the next month alone).

LDN/MAN/UK 003

LDN/MAN/UK 003 RADEO VIDIO
Continuing our series of mixes from our local friends, allies and secret crushes, we’re very pleased to bring you this mix from the hardworking and super talented Radeo Vidio.
With a record collection spanning genres, decades and continents, Radeo Vidio are cratedigging music geeks intent on spotting those hidden gems and undiscovered classics, and spinning them alongside the best of the cutting edge. And with a similar approach in WEPLAYMUSIC, it’s no surprise that we’re big fans. Dance music should be about great tracks to dance to, wherever and whenever we find them.
This mix sees Aaron and James spinning their trademark house sound - deep and warm, full of melodic grooves, with an ear to Chicago past and an eye to London future.

WPM ltd 008 - RAINER WEICHHOLD

RAINER WEICHHOLD - FLASHMOBBING MIX
Well, we’re counting the days now until Christmas, so here’s a little early present from WEPLAYMUSIC - an exclusive mix from Rainer Weichhold, specially produced to tie in with the launch of his new release, the Flashmobbing EP (out today on Great Stuff Recordings). With a sound that’s sweetly melodic, with a percussive bounce, a touch of deepness, and just straight up dancefloor fun, we’re sure you’ll agree that this EP is destined to find a place in thousands of record boxes worldwide. You can sample the new EP tracks in his mix (tracks 2, 5 & 10) and judge for yourself.
If you know Great Stuff Recordings, you’ll know that it’s a record label that lives up to its name, home to WEPLAYMUSIC favourites like Martin Eyerer, Lützenkirchen, Butch, Luomo and loads more. If you dig any of those artists, then you really owe Rainer Weichhold a pint, because as A&R man for the label, he’s responsible for discovering and championing them.
Aside from his role in Great Stuff, Rainer Weichhold plays three resident clubs (like Rote Sonne in Munich), tours all over Europe, and still finds time to create killer tracks that are spun and supported by DJs like Agoria, Mylo, Oliver Koletzki, and Etienne De Crécy amongst others.

LDN/MAN/UK 002

LDN/MAN/UK 002 JUS’ FAB
Our LDN/MAN/UK mix series is all about showcasing our local DJs and artists, and so for the next installment who better than Fabien Spagnolo (aka Jus’fab), who along with ourselves in WEPLAYMUSIC and our friends in Make Me, is responsible for kicking the Dalston party scene into shape with his own night This Is Not Happening. With all three nights occupying the Russian Bar, you know where to go if you want to hear the best new dance music.
Fabien arrived in London from his hometown of Nimes in the South of France just over four years ago, and worked hard DJing all over London before starting up his own night at the Russian. In a strategy we definitely approve of, This is Not Happening aims to bring up and coming DJs to London as a showcase of talent to watch for the future, with Le Loup (Wolf & Lamb) and Makam (Sushitech/Soweso) recently joining residents Jus’fab and Harry James.
This month (17th December) promises to be another great party for This Is Not Happening, as they team up with Smallville Records where their newest signings Christoper Rau and Dionne will make their London debut.

WPM ltd 007 - MAX COOPER LIVE

MAX COOPER LIVE - LIPSE
Well, if it was up to us in WEPLAYMUSIC we’d probably start this blurb with “Fuck! This mix is the dog’s bollocks, the cat’s pajamas, the hamster’s pants!” But not only is Max Cooper insanely talented, he’s humble to boot, and asked us not to go too over the top in the biog bit here.
So instead all we’ll say is this… In an exclusive mix for WEPLAYMUSIC, Max brings us a selection of his own tunes alongside remixes for the likes of Dominik Eulberg and Extrawelt. It’s the best kind of warm, emotive, melodic-but-banging techno, cut up and fucked up with a turntablist’s flair, and yet mixed with ebbing and flowing blends like a top prog DJ.
So have a listen, judge for yourself, and we hope you like it as much as we do.

For his WPM presents mix, Shield brings us a blend of classy deep and soulful house, with a little bit of a Balearic vibe that’s reminiscent of a sunny afternoon relaxing with a mojito on the roof terrace at the Sonar festival.
