WPM ltd 017 - SPADA

SPADA
WEPLAYMUSIC - That’s what we do, that’s why we became DJs. We play music because we love music. So it’s a real thrill for us to be able to commission these mixes for weplaymusic.co.uk - we get to hear more of the music we love than ever before. And the more we hear, the more we have to love. This really is a golden era for dance music - so many people with so much passion, constantly innovating.
This week’s guest mix by Italian Spada is a perfect example of this. It’s almost like he’s read our minds, or snuck a look in our record boxes. From the trademark warm rolling bass of Marek Hemmann, to the loopy Moroder bass of his own track The Match, to the EBM styling of Avus’s Poppy, all wrapped up with that big room neo-prog sound we’ve been banging on about - Spada’s basically ticked off all the sounds we’ve been digging recently.
And if you like his mix as much as we do, be sure to check out his own productions. With a string of rock solid dancefloor movers on *Back Home, Maripoza, Manual Music, Flash, and KarateKlub, and endorsements from big guns like Florian Meindl, we’ll certainly be keeping a keen eye out for his next release.

WPM ltd 016 - RYAN DAVIS

RYAN DAVIS
This is the post-minimal era. Minimal ripped dance music to pieces, and rebuilt it into something fresh and full of life, and piece by piece we started adding in the best of what came before. The irony is that a time traveller from 1995 might listen to some of our tunes now and say “Yes, that’s trance,” or “That’s progressive house, definitely”, but because we’re too cool for that we call it all minimal, even though it really isn’t very minimal any more. There was a movement to reclaim trance from the cheesy Robert Miles mire a few years ago by calling some of the melodic Kompakt type tracks “neo-trance”, but that didn’t seem to take off. And no one has yet dared to start the rehabilitation of progressive.
But progressive isn’t that bad, is it? As an adjective, progressive means rich, warm synths, played out in long, evolving chord sequences - the type of melodies that envelope you and remind you how great it is to be alive. Not a bad quality for a tune to have, and we in WEPLAYMUSIC find ourselves increasingly drawn to this kind of deeply melodic track.
Which brings us nicely to this week’s WPM ltd mix by one of our new favourite DJs, Ryan Davis. As with his own productions on labels like *Back Home, Manual Music and StereoSeven Plus, Ryan’s mix works up sensuous melodies that are part Trentemøller style electronica and part, well, neo-progressive, with the clean, vital rhythms of minimal utilised as the foundations for some truly melodic dance music. And like his own tracks, you’ll find his mix exquisitely crafted, with subtlely lush production. To put it simply, we love Ryan’s sound, and we think it really ought to be sound of the future, whatever you want to call it.

WPM ltd 015 - XIRCUS

XIRCUS
(Max Cooper & Jeet)
For the next installment to the mighty WPM ltd guest Mix series we have a real treat in store for you. Ahead of our event on Aug 20th we have an awesome genre defying mix from Xircus with a whopping 26 tunes carefully packed into a hour!
With his turntablist skill behind the decks and ear for the perfect musical ebbs and flows, what could be better than a set by the super talented Max Cooper? How about Max with his partner in crime Jeet, who together are renowned for rocking the dancefloor as residents of Firefly, Nottingham’s most respected techno night?
Previously known as Cirkus, and before that as Thrash Jelly, whatever moniker they choose, we can guarantee that the combination of Max and Jeet will be electric. Infamous for utilising an astonishing six decks, four CDJs, three mixers and effects, you know that you’re going to get something special from the pair.
Musically, you can expect them to take the basic building blocks of techno and twist them into new shapes and in new directions, with an intelligence and inventiveness that’s second to none, and with an infectious energy that will drive the dancefloor wild. Think scratched up, glitched up, loved up dance music, with warm emotive melodies and chunky minimal rhythms, full of those unforgettable peak time hands-in-the-lasers moments that’s set to make it a truly unmissable night.

WPM ltd 014 - CITIZEN KAIN

CITIZEN KAIN
It’s time to pick sides. In the wake of the minimal revolution, two subgenres are dominating our dancefloors. One takes the stripped down minimal aesthetic and rebuilds the atmsopheres and melodies that minimal hacked away at, adding a touch of soul back into the machine. This is the current incarnation of deep house. The other takes those same minimal rhythms and bulks them up, placing the emphasis on the percussive force of looping synths and driving basslines. This is techno, proper techno.
We’ve had a few great mixes from some new-nu-deep-house DJs, so this week we’re pleased to bring you an exclusive set from Citizen Kain (AKA Bruno D), representing the techno side in fine style. For his WPM ltd mix, Bruno serves up a selection of high energy techy cuts, with chunky percussion and a progressive touch, sewn together with the builds and breaks that drive dancefloors wild.
No newbie to production, since 2006 there have been a string of killer Citizen Kain releases on labels like Regular, MBF, Playmobil, and his own Neverending Records. And with a number of new tracks in the pipeline, whether you’re a techno purist, or don’t care what you’re dancing to as long as it rocks, we reckon Citizen Kain will be a name to remember.

WPM ltd 013 - ANDRÉ LODEMANN

ANDRÉ LODEMANN
You know, we in WEPLAYMUSIC don’t usually mind how you listen to our WPM ltd mixes. Stream them straight to your headphones for a little office escapism, or, if you prefer it a more banging, rip a CD to play on your home system, crank up the volume and jump around your living room. It’s all good.
But if you’re anywhere in the world that’s enjoying unseasonably sunny weather like we are in London right now, then we’d recommend the following listening conditions to make the most of this week’s set: drop André’s exclusive WPM ltd mix onto your iPod, grab those tinny little speakers out the back of the drawer, pick up a couple of beers from the shop, and get your arse to a park pronto. Or even better, the beach. Because with those deep rolling chords and bouncing minimal melodies, this is one to kick back to and watch the clouds go by, and know that with a soundtrack as wonderful as this, life doesn’t get much better.
And if you like his mix, be sure to check out André’s own productions, which include quality tracks and remixes on Freerange, Rebirth, Dessous, and his own label Best Works Records, amongst others. With a genuine musical sensibility, a mastery of ebbing and flowing atmospheres, and an ear for layered, evolving melodies, André’s releases prove that he’s one to watch, whatever the weather.

WPM Presents… PHIL KIERAN

PHIL KIERAN
When you’re trying to write the blurb for a DJ who’s as successful as Phil Kieran, it’s a bit difficult to know where to start. We could reel off the usual list of achievements - ten years at the top of his game gigging at all the best clubs around the world, a massive stack of 12″s and remixes to his name, a place in the DJ Mag Top 100 etc etc - but instead we thought we’d give you two reasons we personally like him so much.
For Mattie, it’s the 2005 remix of Nitzer Ebb’s Murderous, which not only demonstrated Phil’s impeccable eclectic taste (see also his album Shh with cosmic pop and dub influences, or his Essential Mix with cuts from Bow Wow Wow and Autechre), but also kickstarted the rehabilitation of EBM, joining the dots between eighties industrial and cutting edge techno, and introducing some of those classic tracks to a new generation.
For Simon, it’s Phil’s own track Skyhook 2 from 2007, which took the stripped down minimal sound and made it tough and muscular with massive builds, proving that minimal needn’t just be fiddly bedroom listening – it could be as hard as proper schranz techno with the peaks of classic trance. In many ways this tune set the template for our current peak time style, and it still sounds as fresh today as it did three years ago.
Basically, it’s obvious that Phil combines a raw talent for producing top quality techno with a genuine passion for all sorts of music beyond that, and we in WEPLAYMUSIC have a huge amount of respect for him for that.

WPM ltd 012 - QOSO

QOSO
Well, as an up-and-coming DJ/producer you’re always looking to make a name for yourself, so you might as well pick a name that’s easy to Google and useful in Scrabble. Of course, if your tunes don’t rock then your name alone will get you nowhere. Fortunately for dapper Frenchman Qoso, his own tunes (including remixes for Radioclit and Milke) are not only solidly constructed dancefloor tools, they’re also in a style that’s likely to massive over the next twelve months, blending minimal techno with baile funk and kuduro influences, utilising crisp production with a light tribal touch.
For his WPM ltd mix, Qoso works in a similar space, folding back fidgety, tribal sounds into driving minimal rhythms. It’s a forward thinking sound that’s sure to keep the dancefloor on their toes - which makes Qoso one to watch in our opinion.

WPM Presents… MAX COOPER - Part 1

MAX COOPER DJ SET - MULCH
Don’t say we don’t spoil you - this week we’ve got two mixes for you, both from the one and only Max Cooper, who we’re very pleased to play host to at this Thursday’s WEPLAYMUSIC.
This first mix sees Max explore the space between electronica and techno, where warm, organic melodies meet scientific tweaking and experimentation. The second is a showcase of his own tracks, and a reminder that he’s as talented a producer as he is a DJ. Both mixes embody that trademark Max Cooper sound that we love, balancing a real musical sensibility with a deep understanding of dancefloor dynamics.
What can we say? To put it simply, we think Max rocks. He’s crafted a unique sound for himself that’s forward thinking, intelligent, seriously fun, and most of all just great dance music. We think his set on Thursday will be something really special - hope to see you all there :)
